You can renew your driver's licence online as long as your photo is valid - licence photos are valid for 10 years.

A licence can be renewed online even if expired by up to 5 years.

The total amount comprises an annual licence fee of $53 plus a $20 administration fee.

A licence re-establishment fee of $31 will apply if the licence has expired for more than 6 months.

What happens next

When you renew online, you can print a receipt and your temporary licence or have it sent to a nominated email address.

If you use the mySAGOV app, the new expiry date will be displayed on your digital licence immediately.

You should receive your licence card in the post within 3 weeks.

If you don't receive the licence card within 3 weeks phone Service SA on 13 10 84. If you don't contact Service SA within 30 days of renewing your licence, you may need to pay a replacement fee.

Renewing early or late

Licence renewals paid before the expiry date, will commence the day after the existing expiry date.

A driver's licence is valid until midnight of the expiry date - eg if a licence is due to expire on the 26 June, the licence holder can drive up until midnight on the 26 June.

Expired licences up to 5 years can still be renewed online. If your licence has expired for more than 6 months, a licence re-establishment fee of $31 will apply.

If you have a concession and it has been applied to your renewal notice, your concession will be validated during the renewal process.
