The contract rules for your business

BC’s consumer protection laws have rules that businesses must follow depending on the types of contracts you have with your customers. If your contract doesn’t have everything it should, your customer can cancel it and get a refund. This puts your business at risk.

Your contract with your customers is a continuing services contract.

Do you sell goods or services online, over the phone, or by email or fax?

Your contract with your customers is a distance sales contract.

Do you sell goods or services that your customers don’t get right away or don’t pay in full upfront?

Your contracts may be future performance contracts.

We recommend that you do your research to find out what other laws may apply to your contracts and have a lawyer review them.

Your customers can file a complaint with our office if they believe that you have breached BC’s consumer protection laws.
